The record
A late-'50s Decca date built on unusually cool, chamber-ish textures -- flutes, bass clarinets, cello, and french horn threaded around McRae's phrasing rather than a standard rhythm section. Sophisticated arranging choices let her cool, behind-the-beat delivery breathe in ways a straight quartet setting wouldn't allow.
