The record

Johnny Richards' Afro-Cuban suite pushed Kenton's orchestra into dense, brass-heavy territory, with congas and bongos locking into the reed and horn charts rather than sitting on top of them. A high-water mark for progressive big band writing, where Latin rhythm meets Kenton's signature wall-of-sound arranging.

Pressings

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1956 US Capitol, T 731, and it is a mono record. The stereo you will see advertised is Creative World's later ST-1008, which our data marks duophonic -- electronically rechannelled, not a true stereo mix. Capitol repressed T 731 in 1959 and 1962 and reissued the album as SM-11794. A UK LCT 6118 and a Canadian T-731 also date to 1956.

Showing the first pressing, audiophile reissues and copies carrying a collector marker, out of 23 pressings on file.
