The record
Getz and Sonny Stitt trade choruses over Dizzy Gillespie's brass heat, with the Modern Jazz Quartet's John Lewis steering the rhythm section from the piano chair. Long-form bebop endurance, three horns pushing each other toward the changes' far edges.

Contemporary reception
The disk calls dazzling attention to three outstanding jazz performers in Gillespie (trumpet); Getz (tenor sax) and Stitt (alto sax). In four sessions, two with unrelenting vigor on one side, two in more varied approaches on the flip side, the boys offer ingratiating musicianship jazz fans will marvel at. Excellent sound. A festive jazz treat.
Pressings
The earliest on file is the 1957 US Verve mono, MG V-8198, and a yellow-label variant of the same number sits beside it. The German MGV 8198 of that year has a deep groove and a flat rim, and Britain took it on Columbia, 33CX 10095. Every original-era copy here is mono; stereo shows up only on much later reissues. Japan's gatefold MV-1107 from 1969 and the limited 18MJ 9021 from 1981 are the tidy reissues.
