The record
A 1960 debut that already announces a one-man horn section, manzello and stritch stacked alongside tenor in dense, joyous polyphony. Ira Sullivan's presence adds fire from the Chicago scene that shaped Kirk before he became a downtown fixture unto himself.

Contemporary reception
Kirk plays tenor sax and two other woodwind instruments known as the manzello and the strich (resembling in tone, soprano and alto saxes, respectively). These are not used as gimmicks but as honest media for expression. And the expression is of the “down-home” soul blues. A convincing performer. Should interest many jazz fans.
Pressings
The earliest we list is the 1960 US Argo mono, LP 669, with the stereo LPS 669 alongside it that same year. A 1963 US reissue reuses LP 669, so the number alone will not date a copy -- and it is an undated Argo mono that carries the deep groove here. For a cheap listener, the 1984 US Chess reissue, CH-9160, or Japan's 1983 Baybridge, UPS-2227-BC.
