The record
Rugolo turns arranger-to-composer here, revisiting the Kenton book he helped build with a West Coast crew stacked with Lighthouse and studio-scene veterans like Shank, Rosolino, and Manne. The result is West Coast progressive jazz stripped of Kenton's bombast but none of its harmonic ambition.

"RUGOLO PLAYS KENTON" -- The Pete Rugolo Orch. -- Mercury SR 80014 (Monaural & Stereo) Rugolo plays Kenton -- yet Rugolo also plays Rugolo for, as Kenton's former chief arranger, Rugolo collaborated with Kenton on four of the twelve numbers here, and had a hand in arranging the other Kenton-penned tunes. Among the 18 musicians present are Bud Shank, Dave Pell, Shelly Manne and Milt Bernhart playing such famous Kenton numbers as "Eager Beaver," "Artistry in Rhythm," "Minor Riff," and "Concerto To End All Concertos." Big band jazz at its best.
