The record
A twenty-two-year-old Hancock's debut as leader, already stamped with the soul-jazz groove of "Watermelon Man" alongside Hubbard and Gordon's easy authority. Warren and Higgins keep it loose and swinging, a first chapter that hinted at everything Hancock would build next.
Session personnel
- Butch Warren — bass
- Billy Higgins — drums
- Herbie Hancock — piano
- Dexter Gordon — tenor saxophone
- Freddie Hubbard — trumpet

Pressings
Mono BLP 4109 and stereo BST 84109 both date to 1962, and the good copies carry an RVG stamp, a Plastylite ear and a laminated sleeve. The deep groove varies row to row -- both sides, side two only, or an eared copy with none at all -- so groove count alone will not date a copy here. The 1966 repressings show New York USA labels and transitional NY/Liberty pairings, still with the ear. Music Matters' numbered 45 RPM gatefold MMBST-84109 is the reissue to buy.
