The record

Clark's harmonic instincts and Blakey's snap drive a quartet session left unreleased for years before surfacing to round out this stretch of Blue Note dates. Understated hard bop, built on rhythm-section chemistry Clark also used on his own Leapin' and Lopin'.

Session personnel

  • Sam Jones — bass
  • Art Blakey — drums
  • Grant Green — guitar
  • Sonny Clark — piano

Pressings

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1980 US Blue Note LT-1032, an RVG-stamped stereo LP, and nothing earlier is listed -- do not go looking for an original-era copy of this one. A Japanese Blue Note GXK 8180 followed in 1981, also RVG-stamped, and a 2009 US repress of LT-1032 is the easiest to find. WaxTime's 2015 European 180g reissue, 772001, is the least interesting of the four.
