The record

Baritone saxophone and trombone up front -- Mellé and Eddie Bert -- with Joe Cinderella's guitar working the rhythm alongside Oscar Pettiford and Ed Thigpen. It's a low, dry combination, and titles like 'Weird Valley' and 'The Arab Barber Blues' suggest Mellé knew exactly what he had. Two standards close it out. Blue Note BLP 1517 from 1956, produced by Alfred Lion, cover by Reid Miles.
