This 1958 date finds Evans deep in arranger's-orchestra mode, stacking three bassists and a rotating cast of drummers -- Blakey, Philly Joe, Elvin -- against Cannonball's alto and Budd Johnson's reeds for dense, shifting color. A crowded, ambitious session that shows Evans already thinking beyond conventional big-band voicings toward the textural writing of his Miles collaborations.
