The record

A chamber-scaled companion to the big Miles and Monk charts, this small-group session lets Evans' voicings breathe with unusual color -- bassoon, bass trombone, french horn threaded beneath Konitz and Lacy. Understated and exacting, it shows the arranger's ear working in miniature rather than sweep.

Pressings

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1957 US Prestige mono, PRLP 7120. Britain's 1959 Esquire 32-070 is the period alternative and usually the cheaper way into an early copy. Japan reissued it as LPJ-40006 in 1975 and SMJ-6516(M) in 1976. For a modern copy, the 1989 US remaster runs P-7120 in the OJC series, and Analogue Productions' APRJ 7120 -- 2016, repressed 2022 -- is the audiophile edition.
