The record
A rare pairing of two towering stylists who'd somehow never shared a studio date, with Hawkins' broad tenor sound settling right into the Ellington band's plush voicings. Hodges and Carney add their unmistakable colors, making this Impulse! date feel less like a summit meeting and more like old friends catching up.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1963 US mono, A-26, in a gatefold, with the stereo, AS-26, issued the same year and also gatefold. Britain took it on His Master's Voice as CLP 1644 mono and CSD 1494 stereo. Later AS-26 copies run through the ABC years and are plentiful. For sound, Speakers Corner reissued AS-26 in 2007 and Analogue Productions cut it at 45 RPM in 2010 as AIPJ-26.
