The record

Gershwin's score gets a plush West Coast reading, Carroll's clear, cabaret-honed voice floating over Previn's piano and a rotating rhythm section of top studio players. Elegant rather than bluesy, it's a late-'50s vocal take on Catfish Row filtered through Hollywood polish.

Session personnel

  • Joe Mondragon — bass
  • Red Mitchell — bass
  • Frank Capp — drums
  • Larry Bunker — drums
  • André Previn — piano
