The record

A quintet date pairing the tenor's inventor with Oscar Peterson's working rhythm section, and the fit is easy -- Ellis and Brown lay a swinging cushion for Hawkins to stretch across ballads and blues alike. Late-'50s Verve at its most relaxed, proof the man who built the vocabulary was still writing new sentences in it.
