The record
Captured live at the Juan-les-Pins festival, this quintet-plus-Bud-Powell date finds Mingus's working band stretched loose and combustible, with Dolphy and Ervin tearing into extended solos over Richmond's churning pulse. A rare document of the group abroad, it shows the leader's compositions bending toward freer terrain just as the 1960s began.
