The record
A far cry from his later smooth-jazz turn, this ESP-Disk' date finds James deep in free-jazz territory, trading dense clusters and prepared-piano textures with Phillips and Pozar. Skittering, abstract, and bracing -- a snapshot of mid-'60s downtown experimentalism before fusion and pop success reshaped his career.
