The record
Her debut date for Verve, cut with a rhythm section that never overplays its hand -- Brown, Jones, and Ellis leave plenty of room for that whisper-light voice and unfussy piano touch. A quiet template for cool, conversational jazz singing that plenty have chased since.

Contemporary reception
Miss Dearie is a new name for the package trade. The stylist’s fragile, and intimate attack is persuasive and brightly phrased. The material is that commendable combination of the time-tested (“Thou Swell”) and the less well known pieces (“I Hear Music”) and the new (“Now At Last”). Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), Jo Jones (drums) and Miss Dearie herself on the ivories.
Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1957 US Verve mono, MG V-2037, with a deep groove; two 1957 copies are listed and nothing else turns up until Japan's MV 2639 in 1979. The record stays mono the whole way -- no stereo LP appears in our data at all. Verve's own 2023 180-gram reissue, B0037206-01, is the current one, with a yellow-vinyl screen-printed-jacket variant on the same number.
