The record
A big-band gambit for a player usually heard in trio or quartet settings, with Marty Paich-style charts recasting Bird, Monk, and Tadd Dameron themes for an eleven-piece West Coast lineup. Pepper's alto still cuts through the ensemble, proof he could hold his own against a saxophone section stacked with Bud Shank, Herb Geller, and Richie Kamuca.
