The record
Abdul-Malik doubles on bass and oud, and the oud is the reason to hear this: a plucked Arabic lute set against Tommy Turrentine's trumpet and Eric Dixon's tenor. Calo Scott's cello and Bilal Abdurahman's clarinet and percussion fill the middle, with Andrew Cyrille on drums. New Jazz, 1962. "Oud Blues" and "La Ibkey" are where the two traditions actually meet.
