The record

Farmer's burnished trumpet and Clifford Jordan's tenor push past straight changes here, with writing that stretches the quintet formula while the swing stays instantly recognizable.

Contemporary reception

Cash Boxpublic domain

The Horace Silver quintet is one of the most popular groups in the jazz field. Silver’s driving piano is aided by Teddy Kotick on bass and Louis Hays on drums, while blowing up front is Art Farmer on trumpet and Cliff Jordan on tenor sax. The program consists of five Silver originals and one standard. One tune, Silver’s “Safari”, really moves, and everyone has a lot to say. Should be strong in sales.

Pressings

The earliest on file is the 1958 US Blue Note BLP 1589 in mono, with a deep groove, RVG stamp, 47 W 63rd address, Plastylite ear and a laminated sleeve. The catch is that the 1959 and 1960 repressings carry the same markers, so check label address and dead wax rather than trusting a year. Stereo does not appear until BST 81589 in 1967. Classic Records cut a mono BNLP-1589 in 2005.

Showing the first pressing, audiophile reissues and copies carrying a collector marker, out of 41 pressings on file.
