The record

Cut over two October days in '64, this quintet built a homegrown answer to Blue Note hard bop, brooding where the Americans ran hot. Rendell's tenor and Carr's trumpet trade the lead while Purbrook and the rhythm section keep the pulse taut.

Session personnel

  • Dave Green — bass
  • Trevor Tomkins — drums
  • Colin Purbrook — piano
  • Don Rendell — tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone
  • Ian Carr — trumpet, flugelhorn
