The record

Clifford Brown's trumpet burns bright next to Jimmy Heath's reeds on this 1953 date, with Mingus, Percy Heath, Lewis and Kelly splitting rhythm duties across the session. Johnson's own lines stay clean and fast, laying out modern trombone vocabulary in real time.

Pressings

The earliest copy we list is a 1955 Blue Note BLP 1505 in mono -- deep groove, RVG stamp, Plastylite ear, laminated sleeve. A 1956 pressing of the same number adds the flat edge, and a 1957 mono repress carries the 47 W 63rd address. Stereo does not appear until the 1966 BST 81505. The French BLP 1505 of 1983 and the Japanese 2004 pressing are the practical listening copies.
