A late-'60s Atlantic date built for the dancefloor as much as the head-nod, this Freedom Sounds session stacks Latin percussion -- bongos, congas, timbales -- under Wayne Henderson's trombone and Al Abreu's reeds for a loose, groove-first take on the Impressions' gospel-soul standard. Harold Land, Jr. and drummer Paul Humphrey keep the whole thing swinging between jazz combo and boogaloo band.
