The record
A hard-driving front line with J.J. Johnson and Idrees Sulieman pushes the veteran tenor man into thoroughly modern territory, backed by Pettiford's muscular bass and Jo Jones' crisp swing. One of Hawkins' toughest, most forward-looking dates for Riverside, proof the elder statesman could out-blow players half his age.

Pressings
The earliest copy we list is Riverside's 1957 US mono, RLP 12-233. Oddly it is the 1959 repress of that same number our data flags with a deep groove, so judge the copy in front of you rather than the year on the jacket. The UK London edition, LTZ-U 15117, dates to 1958. Original Jazz Classics reissued it as OJC-027 in 1982, and Mobile Fidelity cut a numbered mono, MFSL 1-290, in 2007.
