The record
A Milestone reissue pulling from Mangione's late-'60s hard bop dates before the flugelhorn crossover fame, stacked with a murderer's row of sidemen -- Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes -- backing brother Gap on piano. Straight-ahead and horn-forward, it's a snapshot of Mangione as working bebop trumpeter rather than pop-jazz hitmaker.
