The record

A 1970 snapshot of the Messengers machine still running hard as the hard bop era gave way to fusion's pull, cut for the Japanese Victor World Group imprint. A lesser-documented entry in Blakey's vast discography, worth spinning for the era's transitional grit alone.

Contemporary reception

No period review located yet. The vintage-press pipeline searches DownBeat, Cash Box, and Billboard for this session.

Pressings

This one is Japanese from the start. The earliest stock copy we list is the 1972 Victor World Group SMJX-10086, with a 1970 promo of the same number ahead of it in a gatefold sleeve. It reached the US only in 1976, as Catalyst CAT-7902, and came back to Japan on JVC's 1978 SMJ-6232. There is no US original to chase here, and the 1977 French STEC 244 is a white-label test pressing rather than a commercial issue.
